Thanks Jay!  A smile to start off this monday.  :-)  As someone who also lives in the rural midwest, I can totally relate to your story.  (I have Amish neighbors and driving can be a bit hazardous: the shout of FARM EQUIPMENT! or BUGGY ALERT! is often heard on these roads.)  I've not seen a document like you described, but I'm willing to bet there's something out there like that at the Hillsdale Register of Deeds records!
