We have a HP Scanjet that scans into .pfd format - which is great for emailing...we also utilize a MFC Brother All in One that is connected to our computer and scans documents into our email into a .tiff format.  All the software came with both machines so there was no additional expense-in fact, I wasn't even aware the MFC was capable of doing that until we read the manual.  (It pays to do that every now and again.....)
