I have only done that one time.  It was a company that owed thousands of dollars to some of the other abstractors around here and I had been warned.  When they called, desparate for a current owner search and full copies, I insisted on payment in advance.  I added $30 to our usual search fee to cover the copies and told them that I wouldn't start working on it until they overnighted me a check.

I really didn't expect them to do it, but they did.  I haven't heard from them since, and that has been a few years now.  I don't know if they ever caught up with the other abstractors, but I doubt it.
