I'm sure some of the difference in survey costs is due to the region and difficulty of determining the bounds of the property, but to give you an idea of what we see in my area of Ohio, location surveys are typically $145-$165, and new boundary surveys are around $500-$1,000. 

Of course, the boundary surveys can vary, depending on their complexity and the acreage.

I don't know how the surveyors can do the location surveys that cheap.  Especially when they don't charge if the deal doesn't close.  I think the surveyors often get the short end of the stick around here.

It seems that the surveyors I know are kind of in the same boat as the abstractors - they have to charge what the title companies say they are going to pay, or they don't get the work.
