The S&L you are trying to recall was Madison Guaranty of Arkansas.  I doubt that any politician in Arkansas, regardless of party affiliation, did not have something to do with these folks.  Please keep in mind that these things happened twenty-five some years ago, when all of us believed the S&Ls would survive.
Not to be an apoligist for Clinton, but what a waste of 40 million Starr and Sentelle did with our money.  Clinton, to my knowlege, was never invested in Madison, but did have a questionable loan from them. That was the Whitewater loan.   It is fine to disresect and dislike a former president, heck, I don't think I have cared for the last half dozen. 
But it is important to get the facts right.
