The glass art may be safe. From what I have seen and heard of the French Quarter this will be the first part of the city to come back to life. I think the police have maintained a presence there throughout all this because it was not flooded.

I saw one of those living in the French Quarter on TV yesterday. He didn't want to leave. He felt he was safe as he had food and fresh water. He said they had flushed the toilet with draft beer when the water was shut off. I was also surprised to learn the water is back on, at least in the French Quarter.

The original and oldest part of this city will likely be the first to recover while that which was built up after trhe levy was put in will be the last. I wonder about the wisdom of rebuilding the levy at all. I heard one suggestion that it might be more permanent and secure to use the mountain of rubble that will result from the demolition of unrecoverable buildings to instead raise the land. I don't know if this is practical but it seems logical to me to raise the land rather than attepting to hold back the water.
