Very good points Lisa. The first refugees we saw at Reese were those who fled before the storm. They drove in on rumors Lubbock could provide shelter. Those coming in today are being flown in direct from the affected areas but there are still others who continue to find there way here by whatever way they can. From what I understand the facilities in Houston and San Antonio are already filled to capacity.
Once the local news got wind of these the Red Cross and Salvation Army has been inundated with people wanting to help. Both agencies continue to ask for volunteers because they know many of the volunteers will burn out or simply lose interest. We spent twelve hours at Reese yesterday helping to ready the facility. I came home exausted but the frustrating feeling of being able to do nothing was finally gone. I look forward to returning, but for now I want others in my community to have their chance to help.
