Dear SOT Members,
I think that discussions such as these are important for us to consider when planning in the event of a future natural disaster; however, I think an important point must be reiterated. The only thing currently necessary for us to do is offer support to those who've endured tragic losses due to the hurricane.
This is not the time for blame, or fingerpointing. One thing that our countrymen often do is to place blame when there are no real answers for why tragedies occur in this great nation. Blame was placed upon administrations following 9-11 and blame will be placed upon administrations and single individuals following this tragedy. But, the point of tragedies such as these is to step back, hold out your hands to your neighbors and welcome them into your arms and your homes. While it is much easier to extend a finger and say it is someone else's fault, it must also be noted that the argument could be made that one living in a low-lying area below sea level should have expected a disaster to occur and, thus, the blame lies with them. While I do not agree with this theory, it can be made just as easily as the theory that a single person is to blame for something nature created.
I have personally been touched by those who have spoken out on this forum in support of the victims who have suffered and continue to suffer. Perhaps, a book will one day be written, entitled The Hurricane Katrina Report, that will assign fault and place responsibility upon those who failed the citizens of our Deep South. Until then, everyone should use those very fingers with which they type to shove the keyboard away, grab a pen and their checkbook and do the one thing ALL political affiliations know how to do - write a check.
Whether or not we agree with our government, now isn't the time to pretend we hold one ounce of the stress, the responsibility, or the ability to govern this great nation. I think instead of condemning those in power, we should all be thankful that we aren't in that role right now. I, for one, know that I am.
Just a thought from someone whose job relies upon the 1st Amendment to the Constitution.
Best regards,
