Hey Scott,
I am not licensed to practice in New York, but there may be a way around it. If the aggregate debts are assigned to me in return for negotiated fees, they become my property, and I can represent myself to enforce my own property rights in any court in the country. Email me directly to let me know the details, and whether it is worth your while. Court filing expenses and sheriff's service of process are up front expenses that need to be paid to the court and sheriff to kick off the case.
Are you planning to go after a corporation, LLC or individual? It would be good to determine if they are still in business and solvent first. If you think that there are funds there to pay the claim, all well and good. If they are judgment proof, you will obtain a paper judgment which is unenforceable and will not even recover your expenses. If the matter results in a trial, the individual abstractors will need to appear as witnesses. Let me know if you want to roll the dice.
