This is a reply to a post by J.T. Shoemaker on 11/20/05:

As one of the newer NALTEA members, I can't help but wonder just what folks are looking for in a trade association.  It seems many are critics of NALTEA because it does not seek to be a union with the power to call for a strike or to negotiate higher wages and benefits for the masses.

I see NALTEA as an opportunity to attract customers of a high caliber - who care about the future of the industry and recognize the importance of the independant abstractor.

Whether or not NALTEA ever wields enough power to lobby effectively for change (or against change) on its own will depend on the size and desire of its membership.  A small but growing voice is better than no voice at all.

While I would not agree with the opinion that "nothing is getting done", being a part of those "gab sessions" could easily lead to new ideas to increase your business.  I would rather be a part of an association in which the members are not united by a common mindset.  New ideas will arise from debate, not from a buch of clones nodding like bobbleheads in the conference room.  Many successful business owners pay far more than $200 to join clubs where they can have "gab sessions" with people who can help them increase their earnings.

As for those who would go to the bother of sending private emails just to urge others not to participate in an association formed to benefit them, frankly it just baffles me.  I guess I just don't have the brain capacity to imagine just what kind of monster they have saved you from.

P.S.  Hope the construction is coming along on the new office.  Saw pictures on your website.  Looks like a nice facility.
