In Ohio, counties are required to maintain a "grantor/grantee" index of all documents. A few counties, and one that we cover, also maintains a geographic index. The drawback to a geographic index is that they have to have a legal description for ALL documents filed. For instance, in most counties a release of mortgage does not require a legal description.
The geographic index is nice, though. We can do almost twice as many searches in the county that has it compared to the rest of our counties.
