ALTA was not built overnight. Nor were any of the other prominent associations that now advocate for, and lend respectability to, their members. They were all started by a few like-minded individuals who saw a need for representation for their industry. They saw that the state of their industry could be improved through the efforts of many. But they started out with few.
It takes the few pioneers with the volunteer spirit to pave the path for the rest. The path is still under construction and NALTEA needs more pavers. The results will follow. The experienced abstractor will have a means, through NALTEA certification, to demonstrate to potential clients that they will be working with an abstractor who is adept at the craft and to whom quality work is a serious matter.
There will be dialogue with other organizations to foster understanding between abstractors and those who use our services. That can prove to be a far more valuable vehicle in solving problems than simply complaining about our woes to other abstractors.
There are many benefits to joining NALTEA, as pointed out in some of the posts and replies above. With greater membership, and more volunteerism, the benefits will come at a quicker pace. We will benefit to the extent that we exert the effort. Either way, we'll get what we deserve.
