Hi Scott - I hope this company learned their lesson, but it still makes me leery that a few dollars less can drive them away so quickly. I do know one problem this company had was that management changed around the time I was dumped. I guess the new owner thought they were getting a good deal and the same service, but they learned otherwise.
As for the comments not to take it personal, it is a bit hard not to when I have worked so hard to make this business run properly. I took over this position only when I was 20 years old - I could have been out partying and not being responsible and acting like other people I know (who mess up). But instead I sacrificed some of my early 20's to make sure that in the long run I would have a good paying job and be able to live up to the standard I wanted. It hasn't been easy and I have had to earn my way, take my lumps, and stand up for myself all along. When other people engage in business practices that I myself wouldn't, I feel disgusted. I'm not whining, but I am trying to point out a problem that is cutting into my business (and could cut into yours one day). I am sure these people didn't wake up and decide that they were out to get me, but I was the one who got dropped for a few measly dollars. I take it personal, even though I know it is just business.
As for the whole online thing - I am still one of those old school abstractors who has to drive to the courthouse and actually pull the records because where we live it is not that advanced (I know some people do not get that). Some recorders have sworn that as long as they are in office that the records will not be online. Others are working hard to get stuff online, but you still have to actually drive there and get correct taxes, check probate, run clerk of courts, and pull old lien books. If someone is not doing that in the four counties that I do work in, I would seriously doubt the quality of the work you are getting. That is just the facts.
