Aside from describing the certified deed a "most important document" and suggesting that the federal government "recommends" that homeowners have it, the letter gives no reason to get a copy. I understand that for a one-time, special trip for a couple of deeds, $60 does not seem unreasonable, but this company appears to be targeting one county at a time. The areas of the county where the letters are sent seem to be mostly lower income, lower educated areas of town. I'm sure all of us had the "why didn't I think of it first" idea, and it's not a bad idea to market our services to curious homeowners for a fair price, but to target them and make them think they aren't safe without our services is cause for a lot of sleepless nights, I would hope.
