Then there's Harris County with nearly 3 1/2 million and little Loving County with just 67 residents. I think this is the least populated county in the country. They may take turns on who is to be elected judge this term. :) The county has no potable water source, so water has to be brought in.
One of my counties is the second smallest. King County has only 356 people. King county was part of the old 6666 ranch and most of the residents are ranch or government employees. I remember one day watching a wind scarred cowboy coming out of the courthouse as I was going in. His spurs jingled as he walked and the chaps rustled with each step. His horse was waiting outside in the trailer. I asked the clerk what he was doing and she told me he was there to register his brand.
There is one grantor and one grantee book that covers all transactions since 1887. There is probably enough space left in the books to cover the transactions for the next 118 years. It's a fun place to work.
