Exactly! This client who is subbing this work back to me, had asked me a few months ago to reduce my prices. Since they were an excellent client, I did. They assured me that they would be sending me much more work. Well, right after I cut my prices to them, they quit sending me as much work. They are still a good client but if they are getting one of my prior clients work, I am not getting all of that work.. They are subbing out to other abstractors too.
I don’t think this company writes title insurance but I think they do closings. Maybe that is the reason my prior client is sending them the work. I guess I shouldn’t care since I am still getting some of the work. I do carry E&O, have never had a claim and consider myself a very detailed abstractor. I don’t think that is the reason this prior client sent the work to another abstracting company. I think it is for the sake of convenience as someone else mentioned. I guess it is hard for an out of state company to find abstractors in every county across the nation. If one abstractor could offer searches in several states, I imagine that makes it easier for the client.
As an independent abstractor, I guess the way to expand is to sub out work and try to cover more areas. I just am not ready to do this. I am happy with what I am doing and with my income. I guess I will stay just like I am. But we might have discovered that this is the wave of the future.
