The problem with assuming that they want a current owner is that what they "requested" was all open mortgages. If there is an unreleased mortgage from a previous owner and they have a claim you could be liable for missing it. Sure, you reported all open mortgages on the current owner, but they didn't specify the dates to search - just all open mortgages.
I wouldn't do such a search - if they want all open mortgages, you have to do a full search for marketable title to be sure that all of the previous mortgage have been released. Surely, they don't want to pay for that, or they would have asked for a full search. They want you to do shorter, cheaper search but accept more liability.
My opinion, they are trying to get more for less... same old story.
