The efforts to "redact" information is a no-win for public, the counties, and those of us who use the information for legitimate purposes. See The Truth About Redaction

Governor Jeb Bush had his information redacted from the county Website that was displaying it in Florida. You can google his SS# now and find seven sites that are displaying the "redacted" number. Two of these sites are foreign and one appears to be a hacker site.

Even if it were possible to redact all social security numbers from every county site or location that has already copied the numbers it would do little. A social security number is only useful for 40% of identity theft. Terrorists don't need a social security number, they only need the location of defense plant worker, or govenment agent.  When a federal judge's family was killed in her Chicago home, over 100 judges demanded Allegneny County remove their addresses from the county website. Criminals who steal homes through deed fraud only need a signature and notary seal clipped from an online site and pasted into a bogus document. Even the most careful title examiner will find it next to impossible to distinguish a bogus deed that carries an authentic signature and notary seal clipped from other documents.

The only thing foreign criminals, terrorists, or foreign companies need to take your identity, your home, your job, or even your life is online access to the documents filed at the local courthouse.

Local abstractors who live and work in or near the counties they serve do not need remote access via the Internet. Some may find it convenient, but at what point did the convenience of a few become of greater importance than the security of the entire community?
