The way to "nip this in the bud" is for some enterprising notary to directly charge the consumer a witness fee when they come in wanting a "DIY closing".

When Mr. and Mrs. Customer find out there's another charge in addition to the confiscatory fees the lender is already charging, maybe it'll make them think twice before signing.
