I am going to jump in on your conversation to say I agree with David. What changes it from a current owner just because the "current owner" bought it in 1947? If we have a customer ask us to travel as far as David is asked... and we have because we live on the edge of what is known as civilization in CA... we will charge extra for the distance. But I can not see charging more for a current owner just because we have to go to the books. Now if our rate sheet said: "if your current owner order is after 1971 and we can not find it on the computer and we have to go to the books... we will charge you an extra $50 per hour" ... that is fair.
I will admit that there are those occasions where we have gone to the books looking for what turned out to be a misspelled name. On those occasions I have called and have asked that the fee be increased accordingly. I have never been turned down and I think that is because we are "nice" to our customers.
