Well, it just occurred to me that there might be a simpler way of doing things than trying to get state legislators to listen. They don't care (unless it's their info that's being stolen).
The Registers of Deeds should be the focus of a campaign. They're elected locally. They make the decisions to put the records up or take them down. Appeal to the general public. Ask them, "Do you know who's looking at your personal information? Do you want people in India searching through your records?" Make it personal.
November mid-term elections are coming up. Many of the Registers of Deeds are up for re-election in 5 months. Why not make it a campaign issue? If the incumbent has put the records online, and won't take them down, appeal to their opponent.
Get in front of local media, as well as national media -- any media that will listen. It may be simpler than we thought.
And if the records are taken down, won't the title plants die? Won't the Indian title companies go out of business?
I don't know. I'm just asking. Anybody know how to draft a petition? What is everyone doing on the weekends between now and November?
Teresa
