Eaons ago when I was a "full time independent contractor," two of the businesses I worked with annually asked me to confirm that I worked for at least six other businesses or individuals during the past year and/or current period that I was working with them. I don't know where they (corporations made up of lawyers, accountants and other professionals) came up with the "6 other," however, their concern was that if I wasn't working for "multiple other companies, I would be considered their employee as that was my only source of income." I always met the test, but thought their concern was interesting. They were afraid that during an audit the IRS or Conn. Labor Dept. would re-classify me as an "employee" and they would then have to anti-up all the appropriate federal and state taxes on the money they paid me.
Interesting concept: If during the past year you claimed to be an "independent contractor" but only worked exclusively for one company, are you then an "employee"?
