The Ohio Bar Association publishes a set of standards as well. In Ohio, the bar makes them available for free; you can download them from their Web site.
Oddly, though, the Connecticut Bar Association charges $250 ($150 for members) for theirs. I only found this out because I was searching various states looking for title standards to see how many were available. I was actually only able to about 8 that I could access for free and several others charged a 'reasonable' fee of $25 to $50. I was unable to find any mention of title standards in the vast majority of states, which I thought was strange.
Anyway, Connecticut gets the prize for the most expensive 'Standards of Title' publication. You should mention that to the bar, Kevin. I would hope for that kind of money they are the most extensive set of standards out there. That really wouldn't surprise me - other states' standards seem to be a bit sparse on content.
In Ohio, the Ohio Land Title Association publishes a book called "Principles of Ohio Real Estate Titles" which is much more comprehensive than the bar standards. It sells for around $40. I have copies for all of our examiners. It is known as the "Red Book" and is really our Bible of real estate title. It is an excellent publication.
Anyone else have something like this? I would hope that every state would have some publication that addresses the issues. Perhaps if someone from each state would donate a copy to the NALTEA education committee it would help them with their task of developing a set of standards.
Best,
Robert A. Franco
