There is an amazing book called "Terrorist Hunter", the author is Anonymous because of her work, but it lays out the chain(s) that connect these seemingly inocuous organizations.  It's a few years old now so some things have changed and progressed but if you read it, you start noticing names in the news and making connections between terrorist groups.
