We have not had a problem with theft, but our Recorder placed tags on each book that will activate an alarm when the book is brought out of the record room through the only doorway. It is not foolproof, but it seemed to be a relatively inexpensive and non-obtrusive method of preventing any potential theft.

The Recorders in your area should scan any such books into TIFF files, make them available on the in house computers only and hide the original books in their back rooms. If you can still read and access the images easily, that should solve the problem.
