Around here, borrowers are never offered a choice of abstractors. Usually the title company takes care of that; they use who they want. That makes sense - the insurer is taking the risk of insuring the title, they should be able to use someone they trust to provide an accurate search. However, most of the time, the price is the deciding factor.
Also, in Ohio, the title company is limited in the discount they can offer. They are only permitted to give a $50 discount to any one individual once per year.
