I guess that I could fall into the same category for the most part. After working for a title company for almost 8 years and doing title searches for 9 years, the title company I worked for had me doing the data entry as well as policy preparation in addition to title examintions without any promise of a pay increase. So about 2 months ago I decided to go out on my own to conduct title searches. I also am about to get involve with an associate to learn to do the oil, gas and mineral aspect of title searches as an independent contractor. I got the feeling that no matter how much work I had done for my employer that a pay raise was not going to happen. They had hire more people for the escrow side but no one for the title examination side of the business. I was trying to help them by giving them a 2 month notice of leaving so that I could train the people to take over the 3 jobs that I was doing. This company never pays for overtime and my day usually started at 7:30 a.m. and ended around 8 or 9 p.m., whereas everyone came in at 8 a.m. and left at 5 p.m. When my last day of work arrived they still had not hired anyone to take my place. So far I have been fortunate that my former employer has not been involved with interrupting my business. Some of their clients that did not require title insurance have contacted me to perform searches for them and their customers. If such a situation happens to me I would probably go to the BBB and report them. And next to the State Comptroller to report the infraction. Hope this helps some.
