In my dreams, all our back title files are scanned into our computer database and we have shredded our paper copies. We are researching scanners at the moment, because our workhorse all-in-one just isn't fast enough at scanning.

In the meantine, we use open shelving with plastic boxes designed to hold magazines.  All searches are filed by last name of borrower and are entered into a simple searchable database by borrower name, street address, town (Vermont holds land records by town), and date of most recent search.

One of our compatriots uses open shelving with a doctor's-office system of folders.  Another keeps his in fileboxes, but he tells me he hates having to dig through the boxes.  Since we need to pull back titles often, we like the convenience of having the files right out in the open. 

The bane of our existence? Refiling.
