I don't see how that is any different from signing for an overnight delivery. Once you are in possession of the package, the same risks occur. What if, after you sign for the delivery, you open it to discover that there is a document missing? What if you get in an accident on your way to the courthouse? I don't think that the risk is any greater if you pick them up in person directly from the lender. In fact, you could look through it when you stop in to pick it up to make sure that you have everything you need.
