Hey Joan.  I am local, give me a call, my cell is 757-705-1575. 

There isnt really any classes that teach you what you need to know.  TCC offers an abstracting class taught by a local RE attorney and it is pretty good.  You even go to the VB courthouse after hours to practice searches, but it by far is not enough to be able to go out and search on your own.
Your best bet is to find a company willing to train you.  I know of a few who prefer to hire and train that are in the area.  Unfortunately I am not hiring right now, but I may be able to help point you in the right direction.

You can also see by doing a search in the directory here there is a plether of people in VB, and those listed on here isnt even the tip of the iceberg for the amount of abstractors in the area. 

Price competition around here is awful.......
