Yeah, the trick is not to let the defendant know you are coming. Some of the marshals/process servers are very creative...showing up at the defendant's residence late at night or on the weekend. There is also substituted service if he is not available...such as service on a statutory agent or the secretary of state...abode service or service by publication.
