I think it is law in most states that a communication is deemed served when it is posted in the U.S. Mail. I do not think email has the same legal notice. Personal notes are definitely the way to go to thank. A written cease & desist letter to the offenders should be send registered mail, return receipt requested. This puts them on notice that there is a problem and gives them a chance to respond. Usually a good piece of evidence to file with a legal complaint.
