The term refers to Guy Fawkes, who was known for his role in the Gunpowder Plot, an unsuccessful attempt to assassinate King James I and overthrow the English Parliament, which is about as much as I remember from my high school social studies class without Googling (although you didn't say anything about not using Wikipedia, lol.)
