David specifically wrote "On looking at their original request I note that they did in fact have another company's name in the "To" field"  So, he did recognize the name as that of another company, he just noticed it alittle to late. He figured someone must have sent the order to him for some reason.

This is something that should be on the "things to check before starting a 220 mile round trip search" list.

Could this oversight happen to almost any of us? Yes , nobody is perfect.
Is the client 100% at fault, no
Is David 100% at fault, no
Should he get paid something for the mistake, maybe

Should David check for all and any errors on a order and call the client for verification,  YES, no question about that
Should the client be careful who they fax to? yes, no question about that
