I think the confusion is that in many states appointment of a registered agent indicates that he is the primary agent to receive process, and the Secretary of State is a back up. New York seems to take the opposite approach. I would agree that the on line information for New York is rather limited. In any event New York law does provide for direct service on the corporation. New York Consolidated Laws Article 3 Section 311.
