I have done that, especially if it was a commercial search or  if I just had a "funny" feeling about the client.  Like you said, you dodge bullets that way.  I kind of treat every client on a case by case basis.  With that being said, since our re-opening in 2010 I haven't had many if any non-payments and I think that is because we're more choosy now.
