Actually, Dr. Riley-Smith is considered one of the world's foremost authorities on the subject of the Crusades.  His writings were once considered revolutionary in that he was one of the first modern scholars to challange many popular notions about the Crusades.  His view that they were fought primarily as a response to Islamic aggression is now generally accepted as the mainstream.
