Besides title abstracting and doing closings, my daughter and I have a pet sitting business, and are very active in animal rescue.  At the moment, I can't have more than my 2 dogs, 3 horses and 21 cats.  (The cats are ones people dump off out in the country where we are so we feed 18 cats that aren't ours, and 3 that are, and all the ones we can catch get rabies shots)  Our petsitting business includes pet taxi service for a fee.  We do offer a free pet taxi service to those adopting pets.  If they pay the adoption fee at the animal shelter or aspca shelter, we will pick up the dogs and cats, and transport them to their new homes for free.  I've got one of those to do on the 11th, and I can't wait to give Boris a ride to his new home!  Many of the people hear of the dog or cat by word of mouth, or different message boards, and live too far away to get to the shelter before they close, so we pick up and transport.  A group of us on a horse forum have also worked out overnight foster care for dogs and cats going far enough to require 3 or 4 people in the chain to get the pets across the state, or to the next state. 

So far this week I've helped save 2 dogs at the Wake County Animal Shelter by finding them new homes.  I filled out Boris paperwork for his new family on Monday (they can't neuter him til the 9th), and had a good cry as I walked through the kennels looking at all those pups that I couldn't take home with me. 

Once my farm is done, and all 6 acres are fenced in, I'm going to rescue 9 more dogs.  One of mine is already a rescue, but we can handle 10 dogs total! 

Also, if you can't have another pet, most of these shelters allow "sponsorship" of a dog or cat.  Which means that you are paying a portion of the pets adoption fee so it may be a little more affordable to some.  And remember, that sponsorship is a charitable donation!
