I also charge a mileage fee of sorts. I have varying fees for the outside counties depending on the distance from my home county and the way the county database is set up. I"ve never understood why anyone would charge the same fee for a county that is 100 miles away. Travel is part of the service. We just had a long time competitor give up a few weeks ago. They used employees to travel to several counties in company cars for a set fee. But with gas as high as it is now their business model fell apart. So the employees have been layed off and the cars sold.
The mobile offices are also a big help since we can receive our orders while traveling and route accordingly. I understand that some "smart" phones now come with some of the capabilities we have in our mobile offices so now anyone can take advantage of this technology at least to receive their orders on the fly. In addition services like GoToMyPC and WebEx make it possible to access your office PC and pick up orders while on the road.
I also like Helene's suggestion of the discount gas cards. It makes sense to take advantage of any discount we can get.
