Yes, attorneys generally do prefer to read the law rather than rely on life's experience when it comes to the law. It is called legal precedent.
You are right I was not a member of my law school's law review. I had some rather serious personal matters on going at the time which need not be discussed while attending law school. However, that does not lessen my respect for the selection process.
