WASHINGTON -(Dow Jones)- The U.S. Interior Department will hold off on the sale of some controversial drilling leases in the wilderness areas of Utah, handing a temporary victory to environmental groups that had sought to stop the auction outright.
THE ARTICLE GOES ON TO SAY:
The Natural Resources Defense Council, whose board member, the actor Robert Redford, helped publicize the lawsuit, and other groups said in a statement that "our legal actions have delayed today's transfer of pristine Utah wild lands, but the fight is not over."
The agreement applies to 80 parcels, or about 110,000 acres, of land near Arches National Park, Dinosaur National Park, and Canyonlands National Park. The deal means that the sale of leases on another 52 parcels of land may go forward on Friday, but any bids for leases on the 80 contested parcels will not be completed for now.
The groups have asked U.S. District Court for the District of Columbia Judge, Ricardo Urbina, to hold a hearing in the case on Jan. 16.
