In Minnesota, where there are both Tract indices and Grantor-ee indices, the bar association has passed specific Title Standards that require searching both land records and judgment records with both Idem Sonans and common nicknames.
Old Republic Title has built a tremendous title plant for the 7 county metro area that pulls it ALL out when searching. It is based on the soundex system, and pulls up Jonsen, Johnson and Johnsen for example because they all sound alike. It also searches all common nicknames - Elizabeth would bring up Lis, Liz, Beth, Betsy, etc.
In some counties where it is not feasible to search every variation (they don't all have computers) the abstractor must specify that only the name of record has been searched.
