I will give credit to McCain for his quote in 2003 regarding Bush's energy bill. He called it the "No Lobbyist Left Behind" bill.
Bush has made a mess of the economy, regardless his protestations to the contrary. We had a budget surplus of 2.4% of GDP when Bush took office. Within four short years in was a deficit of 3.6%, the worst turnaround since World War II. He doubled agricultural subsidies, nice free trade move. We got the Medicaid prescription drug benefit without the government being allowed to negotiate prices. Nice for big Pharm, but no one else.
He has spent the entire time in office calling for increased drilling, as though that is a long term solution. I guess the idea is to take out as much oil from the US as possible now, and then rely even more heavily on foreign sources in the future.
We were told that the Iraq oil revenues would pay for the war, don't see it happening yet.
We have seen an increase in debt by the federal government during the Bush watch of about $4 trillion (much held by our friends in China). At 5% interest, that is $200 billion a year in payments. But I did get my silly little check from the government in 02 or 03 and have one coming for last year. It would be easier if the Chinese government just sent it directly.
But at least Comrade George did succeed in making the government the largest insurer in the world with the investment in AIG. We also now have effectively nationalized Fannie and Freddie and are taking large positions in "private" banks. It looks like Bush has Mexico as his template for success. I am just sorry that in his attempt to placate the base that McCain seems to want to follow the same path.
