David you are just full of off the wall info aren't you.  I like it~!!  I have never heard of marking my stuff with SS# but I have heard of the symbol method.  I just thought it very irresponsible for the police to state such a thing....but I suppose in D-town (Delaware) we get spoiled by hardly any crime.  I would have to research the numbers but it seems extremly low compared to the big city.
