I treat my credit cards the same way. We never carry a balance. However, there have been a couple of months over the past several years that I mailed the payment the day before it was due. They don't care about postmarks... if they don't "open" it before its due, they charge the finance charge. I can live with that... but they charge the finance charge for the next 3 months even if those payments are paid in full before the due date. I think that is ridiculous.
There is no doubt that the credit card companies are ripping people off. I know that Congress has held several hearings on these issues. I hope they get around to doing something about it. I would cancel the card and get one somewhere else, but they are all the same these days. And apparently, they know it. When I threatened to cancel the card, they said "no problem, would you like me to transfer you to the cancellation department?"
Best,
Robert A. Franco
