I know that New Yorkers have a very different mindset when it comes to E&O insurance, but it just doesn't make any sense to me. Just because the clients have E&O insurance is no reason why the abstractors should not maintain their own coverage. Using your logic (that most clients have their own E&O), there is no reason for anyone to carry auto insurance because most drivers have their own. Just because the person you may injure probably has insurance, is no excuse to dodge your own financial responsibility.
I also find it odd that the "fly-by-night" companies have E&O insurance, and all of the "professionals" do not. To me, a company that is willing to pay for their E&O coverage and stand behind the quality of their work should not be referred to as fly-by-night. And, being professional should include taking financial responsibility for your actions.
