Yes Scott suprisingly it was the Republican party.

Furthermore on the subject, most people don't realize that the emancipation proclaimation only encompassed the seceeded states.

Furthermore in this great act of "freedom" most people are remiss to acknowledge this little condition of freedom:

"And I further declare and make known, that such persons of suitable condition, will be received into the armed service of the United States to garrison forts, positions, stations, and other places, and to man vessels of all sorts in said service."

The North used abolition to strengthen its forces due to their impending defeat. They used the freed slaves as cannon fodder more or less.

Lastly, and I'll get off my soap box after this, I become very irate when people claim that the Civil war was fought over slavery. It was in fact fought over the very thing that most wars today are fought..... Money. The South got better prices for their Cotton from France and England and the Northern mills didn't like it and pressed for the bloackade of the South, which forced the South into war. Abolition was the only way the North could put a strangle hold on the South's ability to produce cotton so cheaply. Once again, a war fought over power and money.
