The only people that fear an audit are those that have something to hide. If you have good records it shouldn't be a problem like Robert said. I don't see how preparing the taxes would hurt. You could always go back and correct any discrepancies prior to submitting.
I do remember my husband telling me that if you are under a certain dollar amount (which escapes me now) they don't have to 1099 you. Not sure if that is true and We still made sure to claim the income. He kept great records of his closings even tho he did not use any accounting programs or computer tracking. A simple invoice book and mileage/expense log did the trick, altho he was pretty small time compared to some other Contract Closers I know.
Good luck tracking them down but I wouldn't hold my breath.
