Recently I had the same problem in NC, they have a non-conforming fee of $25.00 if a document doesn't meet certain size requirements now that all of the documents are scanned and if the font on the print is not a certain size. Some Register of Deeds actually get a ruler out and measure before recording. Anyway, I had to record 2 documents and one, of course was non-conforming so extra $25.00 which wasn't included in the check that was sent. I called the company and told them of the problem and they said they would overnight a check to cover it and I would have it the next day, but I didn't want to have to make a special trip again and waste time and gas, so I said I would advance the fees, but would like them to overnight my "advanced fees". They wouldn't do that, no they wanted me to wait the 35-40 days like my fee for recording. I even requested in in several emails that I didn't think that was right, in that their client sure wouldn't want to wait 35-40 days to get their documents recorded for waiting on the correct fee amount. Eventually I got paid the fee I advanced before 40 days, BUT I got alot of grief from their bookkeeper said all of the other abstractors didn't have a problem with waiting, which I find hard to believe...it's like we are funding their company, using our money. She didn't see it like that. What do you all out there think about this scenario?
