I think "do you accept credit cards" is the wrong question to be asking.  A better one would be "can you get your clients to pay by credit card?"  I haven't tried to get any of our abstracting clients to pay by credit card because I think it would be a loosing battle.  I'm fine with getting a check and if I can't get a client to pay by check, I don't think I would have much luck getting their authorization for a credit card transaction.

The problem doesn't seem to be that (some) clients need a more convenient method of payment, it is that some of them just don't want to pay.  For those, I don't think it would matter if you accepted credit cards.  And for those who are paying - why would you want to give up the fees that MC/Visa charge?  Profit margins are thin enough... with a credit card account, you would be giving up a monthly fee and a per transaction fee of more than 3%.

It is an interesting idea, though.  If you try it and find that I am wrong, please let me know.  I just don't think that enough clients would opt to pay by credit card to make it worth the fees and inconvenience of setting up and maintaining the account.

Best,
Robert A. Franco
